Classmates Who Have Transferred To The Eternal Duty Station Our love and prayers go out to the family and friends of our classmates who have gone on before us. We will miss them, yet we can find comfort in knowing that one-day we will all join them for the greatest of all reunions. I just received this email from Snookie Garrison about her brother
Pete. Hi Gary, Class Representatives These are the ones who have volunteered so far: 1953 - Jackie (Brown) Kenny JKYKNY@aol.com 1954 - Betsy (Neff) Cote JAPCOTE@aol.com 1955 - Nancie (Anderson) Weber nanciet@inland.net 1957 - Celeste (Plitouke) Brodigan Mbrodi1939@aol.com 1958 - Pat (Terpening) Owen nemoamasa@worldnet.att.net 1959 - Jerry Sandham Jerry.Sandham@aig.com 1960 - Ren Briggs renoldbriggs@mediaone.net 1962 - Dona (Hale) Ritchie DonaRitchi@aol.com This leaves 56 and 61 classes without representative - any one want to take care of your class? The job is not hard. Roster Changes Joan Maltman Rindfleisch (54) New address and phone number: 104 Avovcet Lane

Robert Lynn (53) Seems according to Maxine Lynn we have the wrong Robert. Address on the roster is Robert Lynn, 22 Ramsgate, Collinsville, IL 62234, which is not his address. I have made the correction to the roster. Please delete his address from your copy.
I goofed in the last issue: I showed Sherry Gregory (53) with a married name of Wayne. That is wrong - her married name is Carson and her husbands name is Wayne. Please make the change to your copy of the Roster. Sorry Sherry.
Editors Note: We have e-mail addresses, which are apparently incorrect, for the following. In this issue we are looking for those we have not found from the Class of 57. Some of these may have been found and we are not aware of it yet. If you know where any of them are please let us know.
Those deceased from the Class of 1957 are: William Densford - truck accident 1980's Editors Note: The list of missing for the later classes are getting quite large and are taking up a lot of space in the newsletter. Because of this I am going to split the list of the later classes into two parts and put them into two consecutive newsletters. Item Of Interest From Lisa Meinhart lmeinhart@columbus.rr.com I am so happy to have found your website, I never dreamed it existed. I felt certain that a school for military dependents almost 50 years ago would have been lost forever. You folks have certainly kept it alive. I'm glad that nagging voice inside, hmmm could have been my mother, kept bothering me until I searched the Web. Good work you're doing. Thanks for everything, and I will be certain to pass things along to you all once I get my scanner. Take care. (Editors Note: The above is a copy of an email received by Pat Owen (58). Lisa is the daughter of Betty Sullivan (54). She has found some material of her Mothers relating to Bushy Park and will send it to us when she gets her scanner. Something to look forward to in future issues.) Here is another idea from Pat Owen - what do you think? Should we start a column on this? Gary - every once in a while I see something about an "Overseas Brat" who married into the military. Wonder how many of our classmates went on to not only marry into the military, but continue the "Overseas Brat" tradition, and have assignments overseas, where their children also went to school overseas. In fact, did any who attended Bushy return to England in the capacity as a spouse and did their children attend Bushy? Do you think this might be a topic for discussion in a forthcoming newsletter? Would be interesting to see how many (1) married into the military and (2) were stationed overseas and whose children attended school overseas, and (3) did any of their children continue into the military? Charter Members of Bushy Park This is a new column that I will run each time until we have covered all the classes. The idea for this came from the following email I received from Pat Owen. "I was cleaning out some stuff and ran across the notebook I've kept of most of the original e-mails I received way back when, and one of them was one you sent March 2, 1998, regarding "Charter Members" or "Plank Owners". All of the people listed attended the first year or more that the school was opened. Those you'd marked with an "*" hadn't been found then." In this issue we will list those "Charter Members" of the class of 1953.
Of the original 37 "Charter Members", on the list in 1998, 7 had been located and 1 was deceased. Since then, an additional 9 have been located and an additional 1 is deceased. Memories of Bushy From: Dan Chew (54) chew@csd.uwm.edu During school year 1952-53, Principal Volney Farned allowed the establishment of CHS' own official smoking room. The situation in the old bomb shelters outside had grown dicey. Kids were spending a lot of time in the darkness of those hallowed cinderblock structures blasting away at the unfiltered coffin nails of their choice. Some of this was class time. Users of the shelters were infracting the rules in several other ways as well: these spaces were off limits, were Government property and not to be abused, were dangerous (some personal assaults had occurred in them during earlier times), and generally unhealthy. Plus, hundreds of unsightly butts lay rotting both without and within. Hence, the establishment of the SMOKING ROOM. I forget the room number, or where it was located. I do remember its being at full capacity during smoking break hours. The air was thick and blue with smoke as students, and a few teachers, painted their lungs with tar and nicotine. The din of gabble, guffaw, and gossip was so overwhelming that most conversation required reading lips. Butt kits were provided so while the room itself stunk of stale tobacco smoke, it was kept generally clean. As I recall, students were required to get permission from their parents to use the smoking room. Memories? From Patricia Owen (58) nemoamasa@worldnet.att.net Some memories of Bushy - does anyone who was a 'dormie' remember that in order to visit others either in town or another base on weekends, we had to have written permission from a parent to do so? How many remember that when the permission didn't come we'd hide under the suitcases and coats - getting on the floor and the others would stack the suitcases on our backs and cover it all with coats. We all thought we were getting away with it, but have to wonder if the supervisors didn't know we were doing it. Don't ever remember that anyone got caught. Also from Pat Another remembrance was that in order to keep us girls from being complete slobs, they'd have a contest in the dorm to see who could keep their rooms the cleanest - you got up to 10 points every day. Our room almost always won (not because of me, I'll guarantee you!!!!), and the top rooms during the time period get to go into London and see a play. Afterwards, the bus would drop us off at "Wimpy's" in Picadilly where we'd have a hamburger - wasn't the same as an American burger - but it was a burger. One night we were all (about 30 or so of us) standing on a corner waiting for the bus to return, when several "ladies of the night" started ragging us, asking, "does your mother know you're out so late", and "this is our corner, find your own", etc. As I remember, we basically ignored them and a couple of Bobbys stood by, just in case. When the bus returned, and we'd all gotten on, Judy Szalai (58) threw a British penny toward the one girl who'd been heckling us the most and said, "Here, I hope this makes up for any business you may have lost". It's a good thing we were on the bus, as this really made them angry. We got a good laugh out of it though. Look Who We Found Patricia Ann Trudo Fennell (62) fennell@wcc.net 214 South Madison Street Karl L. Rubinstein (61) klr@rplaw.com 5483 Burning Tree Drive From Nancie (Anderson) Weber (55) nanciet@inland.net I imagine these are some of the 1956 alumni among the missing: Dallas Blount (56) David F McManigal (56) 7 West Bard Ave Alan Siebenaler (56) 30259 Hood Rd Richard M Pfennighausen (56) 1015 North Anthony St An Orville Downing, born 5 Apr 1939, died Oct 1978, is on the Social Security Deaths list. He'd lived at 61244 East Moline, Rock Island IL. Might be "our Orville." Joan Harding married a fellow named Forsythe (last name) and was living in Puerto Rico in the 1960s. Her dad was my dad's classmate at the USCG Academy. I used to keep in touch with her mother, but I'm sure her parents are long gone now. From Patricia Owen (58) nemoamasa@worldnet.att.net Found the Teubner sisters Patricia (Pat) Teubner Crisp (61) 5 Percy Place Mary Teubner (62) Lives in Bulgaria, but her dad didn't have the address as she's just moved. He's forwarding the info on to her, so when I hear from her I'll let you know. Deep Dark Secrets of Bushy Since no one has sent me anything lately concerning the Secrets of Bushy, I am going to use some of the things that are in the Reunion Book from the 1999 Reunion in Las Vegas put together by Nancie (Anderson) Weber (55). The following is from the diary of Mariann (Walton) McCornack that she submitted to Nancie. Dated notations from 1953 . Feb 11th: About 100 kids tried to skip school, but Mr. Farned caught them and suspended nine boys. Feb 14th: or thereabouts. There was a kissing booth at the Valentine party, and it was a marriage booth. I married Don Pohl. Then he became the pastor and kissed all the brides, and I was the clerk. I felt people considered me a prude, and they teased me and call me "Hotlips." Feb 19th: A lot of girls are peroxiding their hair. Todays Miss Haywards birthday. We gave her some hose and signed the card "To Mummy from 41 USA brats!" This evening some girls got some wine and partied in one of the rooms, and they didnt invite me. What a grim night it was! Nearly all the girls got drunk. One of our roommates was barfing all night and speaking nonsense. Feb 20th: Someone told me she respected me; I should feel happy because I hadnt participated. But we all got demerits whether or not we drank wine. After that all the dorm people were shipped home weekends. On the 100 mile bus trip each way for me, I remember singing "99Bottles of Beer on the Wall," "At the Boarding House Where I live," and "Show Me the Way to Go Home." There were also a lot of slaps from people who spotted puddlejumpers (one-eyed cars) first. Feb 28th: I had to go to a Backwards Party, and I had to kiss Kirk Williams. Everyone clapped, and I was embarrassed. Maybe thats when I got the Hotlips nickname. Mar 3rd: We had a slave sale, and the senior class brought Mr. Farned. We made him wear earrings, wash dishes, and propose to Susie Talbot. Jun 26th: Senior Class Day. In the class skit I was a kindergarten teacher turning Mitzis rebels into Yankees. We went back to the dorm at 7:00 and had fun listening to records, dancing, and acting crazy. The phone rang. Lois Fontaine answered it, and we imagined it was the Teddington murderer (it was the neighbor complaining about our loud music). Later we tormented Betty Hayward, the dorm supervisor, by slipping burrs inside her pillow cover. We also balanced paper cups full of water over the door so whoever checked our room got wet! Jul 2nd: Graduation Day. I was so happy that I couldnt quit smiling and my cheeks ached, but Betsy Neff cried. Sammy Myers (also my prom date) went with me to the party, and I had a wonderful time. The bus brought us home at 1:00 a.m. Most people stayed at the TAC all night, but Betsy Neff and I came back to the dorm. Miss Hayward gave all the seniors Coronation mugs. Reunion News From Ted Hopkins (55) mrteddyboy@msn.com Branson Reunion Update: There are 25 reservations so far from our block of 50 rooms. There are favorable e-mails from at least 40 more who say they intend to come. Reservations to date: "53" has four, "54" has nine, "55" has 4, "56"- none, "57" has 9 and "58 has five. Rooms get tighter as Oct 1st gets closer. If we use up our 50 before the end of June, then we could get more before the hotel books out. Our special room rate is $80 incl. tax ($72 befr. tax). From Nancie Weber (55) nanciet@inland.net I'm back, and now it's time to get down to biz on this reunion stuff. Traversing the Panama Canal, the highlight on our 15-day May cruise, was fascinating. And there was no physical violence at our week-long Weber family do associated with grandniece Lori's wedding in Reno last Saturday. Glad you asked. Now, Branson. Several more than have actually committed indicated to Ted that they wouldn't miss the occasion. I certainly hope not; it grieves me to think that another class might top our best participants record up to this time! If you haven't been there, Branson is a great place to visit, and our timing should coincide with the best the Ozarks have to offer in the fall. I'm reasonably familiar with the area as my ancestors were among the first white settlers in the White River Valley. I doubt we'll have time for a picnic lunch at the Upshaw family burying ground (oh, darn!), but there are more mundane options about town. Ted reports, yesterday, that so far 24 rooms are reserved at the "inn," and 14 have sent me checks for the scheduled events. Part of this annoying inconsistency probably has to do with some attendees rooming together. I can't tell so would appreciate enlightenment when you've got a minute if you are in fact sharing lodging or have made other arrangements. We've requested the Radisson hold 50 rooms at the discount price. We can't ask for more until most or all of those are taken, which could eliminate the discount option for late-comers if everyone dallies. '55ers committed or having verbally assured they will be there include myself, Ted, Ruth Lund Bethea, Joyce Ford Williams, and Marilyn Burch Harkey. Informally affirming: Coco Guertin Lajoie, Vic Nielsen, Fred Tims. Tita's recovery from a stroke (she's coming along, and we are wishing her well) will impact the Creasors' traveling. I'm hoping Jerry B and Linda will be able to do the photos again. Where else will I find someone so willing to accommodate my limited expertise, manipulating them! Monday, October 1st: Jim Stafford Show @ $13/dinner + $25/show = $38.00/person. Dinner is at 6:00p, the show at 8:00. If your timing's tight, you don't have to make the dinner. Tuesday, October 2nd: Reunion Banquet from 6:00p at the hotel: $35.00/person. Make the show, reunion checks out to me, Nancie T. Weber. 22309 Canyon Lake Drive South (909) 244-6673 or email for questions. Faculty attending would be icing on the cake! It'd be interesting to hear another angle on some of those old warrior tales!
The particulars, redux ... Radisson Hotel, Branson: (417) 335-5767 or 3602 or (800) 333-3333, "Bushy Park High School Group." $72/night, single or double occupancy + 11% tax = $80.00. Please do try to come, everyone. It's going to be fun. Nancie This and That The following is part of an email I received from Tony Taylor (58) back in1998. I think it is something we should all keep in mind. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag who allows the protester to burn the flag." God Bless all those who served in peace or war. Editors Note If you sent me something for the Newsletter and you dont see it in this issue dont be disappointed. Watch the next issue for your article, but dont let that stop you from sending in something else. We want to hear from all of you and what you send will be published in some issue. As it stands right now the next issue will be very small - I dont have anything from you to put in it. If you want this Newsletter to continue I need your help.
