Dont forget to check the Guest Book on the Bushy Park web site at: http://www.bushypark.org/ Class Representatives These are the ones who have volunteered: 1954 - Betsy (Neff) Cote JPACOTE@aol.com 1955 - Nancie (Anderson) Weber nanciet@inland.net 1956 - Glenda F. Drake gfdrake@swbell.net1957 - Celeste (Plitouke) Brodigan Mbrodi1939@aol.com 1958 - Pat (Terpening) Owen nemoamasa@worldnet.att.net 1959 - Jerry Sandham Jerry.Sandham@aig.com 1960 - Ren Briggs renpat1671@uneedspeed.net 1961 - Betsy (Schley) Slepetz sbslepetz@erols.com 1962 - Dona (Hale) Ritchie DonaRitchi@aol.com As you can see we now have a class rep for all the classes. Thanks Betsy (Schley) Slepetz for taking the 1961 class. A Correction to Last Issue In the August Issue under the "Charter Members of Bushy Park" for the 1954 class I missed Walter (Wally) Costa. Please add him to the list of Charter Members of the 1954 Class. Sorry Wally. There is one other thing I would like to correct - I should have done it long before this. I want to thank Pat (Terpening) Owen for all the help she has given me in putting together this newsletter. Without her help there wouldnt be as many pages in each issue or as many people found. Thanks Pat for all that you do for your classmates. Change to the way the Newsletter is sent out. Beginning with this issue there will be a change to the way the Newsletter is sent to each of you. The number of our classmates wanting to receive the Newsletter has grown each month and has now become too large to continue mailing it as we have in the past. (A lot of the servers will not take emails with large numbers of recipients). To solve the problem Pat Owen and I have split the Class years into 2 groups. Pat will take the 59-62 classes and I will take the 53-58 classes. We have made separate mailing lists for each of the class years and the Newsletter will be mailed in groups by class year. This should solve the problem with the servers. The day before the next (and future) issues are due out I will send Pat a copy of the Newsletter and we will both send them out on the 1st of each month. However, the 59-62 classes will notice a one or two day delay in receiving the October issue as Pat will be at the Reunion in Branson and will not be able to send it out until she returns. Because there are so many new classmates receiving the newsletter I want to remind all of you that I need input from you if we are going to keep it going. Your memories, and thoughts of Bushy, and your classmates, London, England, and the things you did there are the things that this newsletter is made of. I hope you are enjoying the newsletter as much as I enjoy doing it. In this issue we are looking for those we have not found from the Class of 59. Some of these may have been found and we are not aware of it yet. If you know where any of them are please let us know. (I am only going to show half of the names as the list is too long. The rest of the names will be in the next issue)
Charter Members of Bushy Park All of the people listed below attended the first year or more that the school was opened. The ones marked with an "*" are the ones that we still do not know where they are. If any of you are in contact with them please let them know what we are doing and that we are looking for them. Have them get in contact with Nancie Anderson (Weber), Chuck Clemens, Pat Owen or me so that we can add them to the "Class Roster" In this issue we will list those "Charter Members" of the class of 1955. The list was initially published on March 1, 1998. Those listed with a * had not been located then and are still missing. Those with a ** have been located since the initial publication.
Do You Remember It seems no one knew who all the Cheerleaders were in the picture in the last issue. In fact no one sent me even one name. Could it be we are having too many senior moments lately? OK, here are the names: Mary Jane Grinnell, Marcia Craver, Glynell Colwick, and Barbara Jane Grinnell.
Ok - here is another one for you. Who are the two people in the photo below? Could it be Les Paul and Mary Ford??? Mini Bios. Kenton Pattie (56) KentonP1@aol.com After 9 years in English schools, I attended Bushy Park in the mid 50s, and then returned to the US to graduate from East Denver High School in 1957. Since college I've lived and worked in the Washington DC area, beginning with 10 years for US Senators and the rest running national trade associations. Still running several. Last year I received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Fairfax County Bar Association and this year I received the distinguished alumni award from my undergraduate college. I have a cable TV show in Northern Virginia, which features topics for parents. On a past show, I had as guest "Nancy Reed" DeCou a mid-50s Bushy Park student whose father was in the US Navy in London. Nancy, a wonderful grandmother, is an award winning national expert in teaching reading and will soon receive her PHD with a dissertation on the subject of reading. I wish I could come to Branson but I have meetings to attend that week. Here's a suggestion: many of us have 40-50 year old photographs of post-war London and Europe. I wonder if someone would be interested in publishing them? For example, I believe in my Mother's things that we have a picture of us getting off the Queen Elizabeth in Southhampton on its first post-war transatlantic passenger voyage after being converted from a troop ship. Memories of Bushy From Hal Fergusson (57) haroldfergusson@yahoo.com Do you remember a fellow who at the beginning of the 1953 class, he was probably a senior, who went around with an old silk top hat?? There is a story to that and several others I have that I will share this month if you like. For instance do you remember the fall of 1953, around Guy Fawlks season, the firecrackers that kept going off and the school paper asked "Who is the Lone Stranger" and would you cut it out?? I guess its time to tell all. Any rate I'm looking forward to the reunion in October and meeting some of those who share the same and similar memories as I have. From Duncan Howser (61) OLDGOB@aol.com Allan Duncan Howser Jr. was a sophomore at Bushy Park for one year...repeated the soph year at the American School in London...returned to the USA to graduate from Bellevue, NE (next to Offutt AFB) in 1962. Used to ride the bus in from Beaconsfield area. Lived in Jordan's Village (little known historical spot) and took the train north to Beaconsfield where I caught the bus. I prayed for fog days...LOL There were several alumni from Bushy at Bellevue with me... Robert Bolton, Katheryn Maxey, Frederic Selbie III, Clifford Spohn II, Suzanne Trammell....juniors in 1961-62, that I knew were alumni of Bushey...Karen and Sharon Magers, and Bill Ernst! From Joyce (Ford) Williams (55) liltiger@cwis.net I talked with Bob Chandonnet. When I told him I was Joyce Ford Williams - he said he couldn't remember me. Then I said "Remember the girl in school you called the girl with the hour glass figure"? He said, "Oh my gosh, Joyce Ford". He just laughed and thought the call was really neat and wanted to know if I still had the hourglass figure. I assured him I did and then some! He said he was fixing to retire soon but didn't know definite date but he and his wife would love to come but just didn't know right now. I told him I would keep him informed. I have never been able to contact Bobby Coppa and I have tried. I wrote a letter to his son but apparently they are not close so Bobby probably didn't get the letter. I would dearly love to see him. It was Bobby, Jon and Joyce. We were very close friends. But my best friend forever is Billie Culp. The way we email one another it feels like were sipping coffee and just enjoying life. I found Gene Hibbeler's letter he wrote me and get this...Mike Harper and he both went to England on the SS United States in '52 - Billie and I met on the USS United States enroute to England. We were best friends from the beginning ('53). The trip over to London, England with Billie and the SS United States was so great I could tell you a lot of things but oh did we have fun. Once we crashed the 1st class ballroom in our jeans!!!!!!!! and got kicked out!!!!!! I got out my annual and of course I remembered Wally Costa and I remember Johnny Meurer. It was Mike Harper who found him through the Internet about 8 months ago now. Reunion News We are not going to make a habit of this, but will from time to time print something like this if we feel it might be of interest to some of our group. We know that some of you have ties to both Bushy Park and Lakenheath High School, so we're publishing excerpts from a letter sent by Sherianne Sellers Seibel (62) to Lakenheath High School Graduates (61-62-63) "I know it's been 40 years, but... Ever thought about your (old) friends from high school? Where they are? Who they married? Stuff like that? Wanna catch up with some of them on a cruise? Some of us do and we are inviting everyone from our classes that we can locate. A small group of us met at the LHS reunion this past July in Cocoa Beach, Florida for a 40th reunion of the opening of Lakenheath High School (for information on that, go to www.lakenheath.cc ). And we had so much fun that we decided we would like to do it again next year, but mostly for "our" years. The consensus was that a cruise would be the easiest way. Since Charlie (Gillespie) and I live in Florida, we offered to try to set it up. This will not be a reunion in the traditional format; all we want to do is to create the opportunity for people to re-meet each other. The only "official" function we will have will be one group reception with an open bar on the first or second day of the cruise. If you have cruised before you already know that your room, all meals, and shipboard entertainment are included in your cruise ticket. The planned cruise dates are April 29 through May 4, 2002. If you'd like more information about this reunion, please contact Sherianne Sellers Seibel (62) at 1714 Indian Trail, Leesburg, FL 34748 352.65.1887 or email seibels@lscc.cc.fl.us A Mini Reunion From Mariann (Walton) McCornack (53) MarGenMc@aol.com The valedictorian and salutatorian of the class of '53 had a great reunion in July. Mariann Walton McCornack was able to visit Anne Marie Jones Weber at her home in Walton, Oregon where Anne has a huge crop of blueberries, sheep, goats and chickens. We had not seen each other in 48 years, so we had a grand time reminiscing. Good News We Would Like To Share From Sherry Konjura (57) sherger@juno.com We just got back from doing a show in Florida and then going out to Tulsa, OK to see my family. Started rehearsals for the fall show up here immediately, but Gerry talked me into asking is it would be at possible for me to get off October 1st and 2nd for the reunion. (The Producers hardly EVER allow this)...but they were really nice when I explained how long it had been since I'd seen anyone, etc. and let me get an understudy! So, as of yesterday (Friday the 3rd) I am officially coming to the reunion! I just heard from Pete that Bill Cooper has talked Karl Phaler into coming! Sounds like '57 is going to have a good showing...I'm very excited and can't wait. From Beverly (Gehrett) Wagner (58) I'm hoping to receive the BP newsletter. Bob and I are back on the road after an 8 month layoff to get Bob's hip back in shape. He is doing well. We are in Oak Harbor, WA. visiting our daughter and her family. It is a good time of the year to be here, and we are thoroughly enjoying the 3 grandkids!! Take care. Bev. This and That From The Editor Gemma Gamble (54) has just signed on to receive the Newsletter. Why is this special? All of those who have been found from the class of 54 are now receiving the Newsletter by email. Gemma makes it 100% for the 54 class and makes them the first ones to do so. Important Information for those of you that use Juno for email from Herb (Chico) Kieswetter (56). If you have an older version of Juno, it will not accept attachments. I got an upgrade about a year ago, and the latest version will accept attachments. I don't know the upgrade number. From Ron Crowe (64) roncrowe@pacbell.net Do you know about the new website that Jay Mercer, class of '66, has created? He has offered to scan annuals for each class and is offering a page for class reps to post information. It is quite an incredible page. Check it out at: http://londoncentral.org/classreps.htm From Richard "Rick" Schroeder (55) SSchroe273@aol.com Thanks for the August news letter. Have one correction to make for the next one. On page 11 you reprinted a suggestion that I had sent to you about dredging up old photos to try to resurrect the old place on film. The next paragraph was about me trying to find my old algebra teacher. That is old news and I found her with Nancy's help. Her name is Joy Zindell and I contacted her in August of 1998. They do not have a computer (or didn't then) so no email address. Her mailing address is 437 Oak Point Ct., Santa Rosa, Ca 95409 - 6337. The summer algebra session I mentioned was in August of 1954. Please put the information in the next issue so that everybody doesn't have to waste time trying to locate her and will have the info if they want it. Here is her bio as she gave it to me in her letter: After returning to the states in 1955, she and her husband spent a year in Albany, N.Y., where her husband was a professor at SUNY. In 1956 the moved to California and have been there ever since. She taught mathematics at Woodside High School in a suburb on the peninsula south of San Francisco. Her husband was in administration there. They retired early and built a home in Santa Rosa, which is in Jack London's scenic Valley of the Moon, which is in the wine country, close to many vineyards and interesting wineries. They are an hour away from their daughter and son-in-law (both attorneys) and seven year old (in1998) granddaughter. Joanne visited Sandy in Riverside prior to both their leaving for Pasadena and pre-Rose Bowl festivities. The two girls became good friends during the Miss America contest when they discovered both had been dating Cadet Ted Hopkins of the Air force Academy. |
